Blanton Forest : Over 3000 acres of old growth forest. Many trees are 200 to 400 years old. We did this hike around mid-day on December 27, 2005. The first mile of the hike was dry and somewhat cool. When we approached 1800 feet above sea level, the forest was covered with an inch of snow and the tops of the trees were covered in hoar frost. As we continued climbing up the trail, the temperatures began to rise into the 40's and 50's and the snow and frost rained down from the rapidly warming canopy as ice water and slush. We eventually emerged from the forest on Knobby Rock, the perfect place to dry out and warm up in the bright sunshine.
